What's All This Fuss About Journaling?
Jan 16, 2025
Journaling for the Stressed and Busy Soul.
Do you ever feel like you’re moving through life on autopilot? Always checking off tasks and rushing from one thing to another? Maybe you feel disconnected or like you're missing something, or like there's some quieter, truer part of you that's waiting and hoping to be seen?
So many people I talk to feel like this and me too sometimes, even with all that I know about slowing down. It's the way the world is designed now so we have to get more intentional about taking our time back. We have to use all of the tips, tricks and tools at our disposal. We have to find a way to pause, even for just a few minutes, and come home to ourselves.
And journaling is one of those ways. It’s a simple, profound practice that invites you to reconnect with the person you are beneath all of the noise. It doesn’t demand perfection or productivity; it only asks for your presence.
It has helped me through some of my most challenging times which is why I'm so passionate about it and why I've created this beginners guide.
Let me hep you get started and remind you why it’s so worth it!
Why Journaling?
In a world that demands so much of you, journaling is a sacred pause. It allows you to:
- Release Stress: Writing down your worries can feel like pouring the weight from your mind onto the page. It’s a way to untangle the mental knots that keep you feeling stuck.
- Gain Clarity: Journaling helps organise your thoughts and uncover patterns. You might find solutions to problems or a sense of direction that was hidden beneath the surface.
- Deepen Connection: Through writing, you build a relationship with yourself. You come to know your feelings, your dreams, and your needs in a way that’s deeply nourishing.
- Cultivate Gratitude: A journal can be a container for moments of joy and gratitude, grounding you in what matters most.
- Spark Creativity: Even if you don’t consider yourself creative, journaling opens a space for imagination and playfulness to emerge.
Simple Tips to Begin
Starting doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here are some gentle steps to guide you:
1. Choose Your Tools
Pick a notebook that feels inviting. It doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that makes you want to hold it and write in it. A simple pen or pencil will do. If digital journaling feels more accessible, use a note-taking app or a journaling platform.
2. Create a Space
Find a quiet spot where you can sit comfortably. Maybe it’s a corner of your couch, a sunny table, or even your bed. Light a candle, play soft music, or bring a cup of tea if it helps set the mood.
3. Start Small
Begin with just a few minutes a day. You don’t need to write pages and pages; even a few sentences can create a meaningful shift.
4. Use Prompts
If staring at a blank page feels intimidating, prompts can be a gentle way in. Here are a few to try:
- What is one thing I need today?
- What’s been on my mind lately?
- What is one thing I’m grateful for?
- How do I want to feel this week?
5. Release Expectations
Your journal is your space. It doesn’t have to be perfect or profound. Spelling, grammar, or coherence doesn’t matter. Let your thoughts flow freely, just as they are.
6. Experiment with Styles
Journaling can take many forms. Try freewriting, bullet points, doodles, lists, or even mind maps. See what feels most natural to you.
7. Be Kind to Yourself
There’s no “right” way to journal. If you miss a day, week, or month, it’s okay. Your journal will always be there, ready to meet you whenever you return.
An Invitation to Pause
Think of journaling as an act of self-kindness. It’s a small, daily offering of time and attention to yourself. Each word you write is a way of saying, “I’m here. I see you.”
So grab your pen, find a moment of quiet, and begin. Write like you’re talking to a dear friend. Write like you’re discovering the truest parts of yourself.
Because you are.
