(Part 1 of 6)

Take a journey with me through the five master elements

& improve your health and wellbeing.

The 5 great elements (Panchamahabhuta) are a beautiful part of Yoga + Ayurvedic philosophy that show us how to stay healthy and balanced on and off the mat. They give us a language to better understand what we’re going through. And why things feel the way they do.

And they've helped me to navigate my health/life without that nagging thought "there’s something wrong with me”

So let's dive right in!

According to ayurveda (the sister science to yoga) everything in the universe is made up of 5 great elements - including us.

They are:

  • Prithvi (Earth)
  • Jala (Water)
  • Fire (Agni)
  • Vayu (Air)
  • Akasha (Space/Ether)

The five elements (called the Pancha Mahabhutas in Sanskrit) come from ancient yogic and Ayurvedic teachings. They're the building blocks of the universe, as well as our bodies.

Everything is created with a different combinations of these five elements, including you and me.

Each of the elements corresponds to specific qualities and functions within our body and mind. Therefore, understanding how to balance these elements within ourselves and having awareness of when they are out of balance can make sure we stay healthy, happy and in harmony in our yoga practice and daily life.

Here is an overview of the 5 Master Elements along with their associated chakra (energy transmuter/transformer) mudra (hand gesture used to help harness or direct energy in the body) and bija mantra (seed sound)

I've also included archetypes that could be representative of each element as I find this really helpful in understanding our energy selves.

For a more comprehensive picture of these see other posts.

Earth (Prithvi)

The foundation. The element of bones, structure, stability and groundedness. You feel it in the slow, steady rhythm of a walk in nature. Earth helps you feel safe and steady. Too much earth element and you might feel stuck or heavy.

Mood: Calm, safe, reliable, grounded

Chakra: Root (survival, stability, support)

Archetypes: Mother, Nurturer, Caregiver

Mudra: Prithvi Mudra — Thumb to ring finger.
Bija (seed sound): Lam

Balanced: Grounded, stable, connected, nourished.
Out of balance: Lethargic, stubborn, disconnected, resistant to change.

Water (Jala)

The flow. The element of emotion, adaptability and creativity. Water is cleansing and nourishing. Supports everything from your circulation to your tears. It's what helps you feel. your emotions and be open to change. When water is balanced, you're in flow. When it's not, you might feel overwhelmed or emotionally blocked.

Mood: Adaptability, flexibility, creativity

Chakra: Sacral (sensuality, creativity, free to feel)

Archetypes: Empress, Artist, Goddess

Mudra: Varuna Mudra — Thumb to little finger.
Bija: Vam

Out of balance: Overly emotional, clingy, overwhelmed or dry, closed-off, emotionally numb.

To balance: Do gentle hip openers and slow flowing movements. Stay hydrated. Have a good cry if you need to. Listen to music. Swim. Journal about how you feel.

Fire (Agni)

The transformation element. Fire brings heat, energy, metabolism, and drive. It’s what fuels your digestion -of food, thoughts, and experience. Fire helps you take action. But when it burns too bright, you might feel irritable or burnt out.

Mood: Confidence, discipline, motivation

Chakra: Solar Plexus (sense of self/ego, inner power, purpose

Archetypes: Warrior

Mudra: Agni Mudra — Thumb to middle finger.
Bija: Ram

Balanced: Energised, motivated, focused, confident.
Out of balance: Angry, critical, overheated, or burnt out and depleted.

To balance: Move your body. Try core work or breath of fire. Eat warm but not spicy food. Don’t overbook your schedule. Rest when you need to.

Air (Vayu)

The movement element. Air rules breath, circulation, and the nervous system. It’s the buzz of excitement, thoughts and ideas. Air gives life to your practice and inspires your creativity. Too much though, and you might feel anxious or scattered. ** Those with special brains like me (adhd) tend to have a-lot of this element!

Mood: loving and compassionate awareness, intellect, lightheartedness

Chakra: Heart (love & compassion, The bridge between soul Self & physical self)

Archetypes: Lover, Healer,

Mudra: Vayu Mudra — Thumb to index finger.
Bija: Yam

Balanced: Clear thinking, easeful breathing, creativity, flexibility.
Out of balance: Anxious, restless, forgetful, easily distracted.

To balance: Do slow, mindful movement. Practice deep, calming breaths (like alternate nostril or 1:2 breathing). Write down your thoughts. Stay warm and grounded.

Space (Akasha)

The container. Space is where everything happens. It’s the pause between breaths, the silence between thoughts, the openness in your heart. Without space, nothing else can exist. With too much, you might feel disconnected or spaced out.

Mood: Spacious, open-minded, universal consciousness

Chakra: Throat (truth, expression, communication, integrity

Archetypes: Teacher, Communicator, Sage

Mudra: Akasha Mudra — Thumb to middle finger.
Bija: Ham (or Kham)

Balanced: Spacious, present, connected to intuition and truth.
Out of balance: Disconnected, lost, unsure, overly spaced out.

To balance: Rest. Meditate. Do less. Journal without agenda. Practice yoga nidra. Let yourself feel the stillness.

Remember -

This isn't about “fixing” yourself. Just begin by noticing and choose small, supportive shifts. Like everything at Warrior Heart Yoga, working with the elements is about coming back to your most vibrant and confident self. Who you already are underneath the stress, unhelpful habits and the noise of mid-life in 2025!

If you’re a member of the Online Studio you can easily find different classes themed around the elements to help you embody these teachings in to your practice.

Love always,

Tara xx
